Dock Street is extremely proud to work with local artists on labels for our 16oz cans. It brings us great joy to be able to collaborate on these portable works of art, which end up on shelves in grocery stores, delis and home refrigerators, not to mention bars and restaurants across Pennsylvania and New Jersey. We hope to bring new awareness and eyeballs to these fantastic independent creators, and are honored to have their work grace the vessels of our own liquid art.

Check them out below, presented in alphabetical order:

LAUREN MICHELLE KELLY

My name is Lauren Michelle Kelly and I am a Philadelphia-based artist & designer. I graduated from Tyler School of Art, Temple University in 2017 with a Bachelor’s of Fine Art, in Textiles and Design and an Art History minor.

Over the past decade, my career has grown into a portfolio of short-term and long-term projects that focus on concept design, branding/packaging design, and creative direction. My signature style/aesthetic is depicted through its colors, illustrative line work, and personified whimsy.

I have woven myself and my artwork throughout a variety of industries, including fashion, small/local businesses, the fine art community, hospitality, and distilleries/breweries. The diversity I’ve experienced in these settings helped me harmonize the quirky and sophisticated qualities of my creativity.

MIGUEL SANCHEZ CASARES “MIGOTAS”

Our only artist not from Philly is Miguel Sanchez, aka “Migotas.” He is an incredibly talented artist from Oaxaca, and we were lucky enough to meet him and have him illustrate the label for Vicio, our Made-in-Oaxaca mezcal from our sister spirits brand Dock Street Spirits. Miguel created the axolotl on the Vicio label, and his art is visible throughout Oaxaca on walls across the city. It’s always a joy to stumble on one of his works while we’re there visiting our Vicio.

ABOUT MIGUEL:

I was born in the city of Oaxaca in 1988. My family comes from a Zapotec population in the valley of Oaxaca that likes accordion and bajo sexto music and makes mezcal. I grew up in the Llano Verde neighborhood, a neighborhood belonging to the municipality of Santa Cruz Amilpas, in which most of the population is from San Baltazar Chichicapam (my community of origin), a place where I have developed as an artist and as a human being. I completed my degree in plastic and visual arts from the Benito Juárez de Oaxaca autonomous university, as well as the clinics for specialization in contemporary art CEACO, from the cultural center "la curtiduria" at the same time I have developed my professional career in various public and private workshops .

My creative processes are directly linked to my context, influences, activities and lifestyle. Hip hop, boxing, animals, history and mythology etc. They are recurring themes in my artistic pieces, I always try that my work builds the meanings of the symbols to generate a reinterpretation and criticism through the overlapping of elements, my work has a pamphleteering nature, I use multiple graphic elements and my supports are techniques traditional, mostly two-dimensional. I really like to enjoy my processes and use resources that I am passionate about. I generally work in series, although sometimes I isolate my ideas and projects.

JOHN CARLANO

cans harrison.jpeg

Honorable mention to John Carlano, who designed our first round of cans in 2017!

John Carlano stays busy running a mixed use photography studio located in The Crane Arts Building in Philadelphia.

Johns primary interest remains in a life long investigation of a fine art based image making, changing materials and content whenever it seems appropriate.

For 20 years John worked with chemically altering silver prints to achieve patinas beyond toning, manifested in portraits, still lives, and landscapes.

Currently John is discovering how digital technologies can address similar visual concerns in a way that is less toxic to the environment and his own body, photographing " photographs" of the human landscape and manipulating the image in multiple ways. Questions are asked about what is new and what is historic and what is photographic.

MASTERMINDS AGENCY

In 2014, Masterminds Agency, based here in Philly, recreated our sailor logo, which hadn’t had an update since 1985.

A WORD FROM THE MASTERMINDS:

Hey, thanks for actually reading this copy. Seriously. We appreciate your attention while we pontificate a little bit about ourselves. For 25+ years we've been bringing the wood to client advertising challenges great and small. From complete branding overhauls to building fans and followers, we make it happen. Pontificating over.
