Dock Street Brewery South
This industrial stretch of Washington Avenue is a surprising location for a brewery and pizza spot, but there’s really nowhere in Philly where great beer and great pizza (and in the mornings, great coffee) aren’t appreciated. It’s an airy, spacious spot, great for group hangs and events.

Dock Street Brewing was the city’s first microbrewery — established in 1985 — and now has two locations, in West Philadelphia and Point Breeze. Flagships like the Dock Strock Amber Ale and the Dock Street Bohemian Pilsner are still going strong, but there are also lots of new options, like the Madam Vice President and the Futuro Italian Pilsner. Check the event calendar for events like Free Music Fridays or to book a behind-the-scenes tour.

“A long maple bar, a comfortable lounge space, and a mess-hall-style dining room where Euro-esque small plates (octopus socca; Sicilian-style rotisserie chicken) combine on a menu that’s more substantial than your average wings-and-nachos brewpub fare. On the drinking side, there are 12 taps pouring Dock Street beers, hand-pumped cask variations, cocktails shaken up with local spirits, and a whole coffee-shop side of things called Center of Gravity, open early every day and covering all your caffeination needs. Really, this makes the new Dock Street South an all-day brewpub, which may sound strange at first but is actually, the more you think about it, truly brilliant. 2118 Washington Avenue, Point Breeze.”

As Philadelphia’s first microbrewery, Dock Street Brewery will likely have a permanent place in the annals of craft beer history, due largely to its Bohemian Pilsner. One of Dock Street’s original brews, it’s a classic Czech-style pilsner brewed with traditional Saaz hops for milder aroma and flavor. Though tasty, it’s also important, as it was the only Pennsylvania-made brew listed in preeminent beer critic Michael Jackson’s seminal 1988 beer book The New World Guide to Beer.

Case in point, Dock Street Brewery has been brewing up great beer since 1985. This place is an institution of the Philly beer scene and worth a pilgrimage when you’re in town. Grab a cask beer (whatever is currently on tap) and settle in for a great drinking session.”
