This is major, you guys: Earlier this month, Dock Street Cannery + Tasting Lounge was nominated for Best New Bar in Philadelphia by the folks at TimeOut Philly. We didn’t win - we lost to Royal Boucherie, Top Chef Nick Elmi’s newest spot in Old City - but we were in some seriously great company, including Oloroso, Friday Saturday Sunday, Suraya, Philadelphia Distilling and of course, Royal Boucherie.
We’re glowing, and we don’t just mean our bad-ass neon sign.
If you haven’t been over to the Cannery yet, come check out our auto-garage-turned-cannery-slash-cocktail-bar here in West Philly. During the day, the space is brewer domain - they’re in here kegging, canning, and cleaning, but by late afternoon Wednesday through Saturday, it flips over to a craft cocktail bar commandeered by Danny Godinez, newly arrived from San Francisco (by way of Oaxaca), where he worked at a nationally-recognized craft cocktail spot, 15 Romolo. Danny’s mixing up some unspeakable things (he has a secret cocktail menu if you’re brave enough to ask)
We’re fully stocked with local spirits, including Dock Street Spirits Vicio Mezcal. But we can’t forget the most important part of a successful bar. Danny loves keeping the cocktail menu fresh with seasonal ingredients (everything from dehydrated pineapple dust to edible flowers, dried bananas and Buddha’s Hand) and event-driven concepts.
While we leave lunch and dinner to our woodfired oven next door, we’ve got the beets, and other delicious snacks, including a solid local cheese plate with housemade pickles.
It’s a pretty low-key bar with some of the best cocktails around (see also: TimeOut’s nomination; photos of the gorgeous drinks in this story) but check out the regular monthly happenings such as #ComedyAtTheCannery, #CreativeAtTheCannery, #QuizzoAtTheCannery and maybe, just maybe, #KaraokeAtTheCannery. (Don’t worry, we’ve got your liquid courage.) Saturdays are BYOV (Bring Your Own Viny), so choose the tunes and get your drank on to whatever you’re feeling – we won’t judge your Bieber fever.
